Experimental re-sult showed that during the tensile drocess, local macroscopic yielding alwaysoccurreed first in the stress concentration region and then the plastic deforma-tion extended along the length of the specimen. The plastic deformation proces-ses were the same whether the metallic materials had distinct yield point ornot. Different kinds of materials show different propagation performances. Theplastic deformation of brass propagates very slowly. Most materials commencetheir yielding only from a few stress concentration regions, but the nodularcast iron has many yield origins. Materials also experience similar plastic defor-mation propagating process when they are cyclically loaded below the staticyield point, but their propagation features depend upon the hardening-softeningbehaviour as well during the fatigue process, and strain is not uniformly distri-buted along the length of the specimen. Therefore, the fatigue hardening-softening curve obtained in a general way reflects only the macroscopic averagevalue within the measuring distance of the specimen, instead of the real hardening-softening characteristic of the material.

A numerical calculation model simulating the main performance of electro-magnetic railguns is described in this paper. The model takes into account the increase in plasma armature masses due to the wall ablation and the drags caused by various effects such as the friction between projectile and wall, the plasma viscosity and the air resistance etc. We characterize the drags by an experimentally determined coefficient and consider the plasma armature as a time-de pendent resistance while neglecting the details...
