Optical modulators using semiconductor waveguide in fiber ring lasers are investigated theoretically. The analysis shows that the modulation mechanism resulted from the polarization control in the fiber loop and polarization adjustment of semiconductor waveguide. This provides a theoretical evidence for a new type of selfstaring modelocked and selfQswitched meachanism in fiber lasers.

The authors report the operation of a harmonically and regeneratively modelocked erbium fiber ring laser at 1. 55um. Harmonic regenerative modelocking was achieved by feeding back the harmonic longitudinal beat signal which was detected with a high speed photodetector and a high Q dielectric filter. The laser keeps mode-locked status during 24 hours.
