Development of multiple nectaries in the lower leaf surface vein axils is considered to be an advanced strategy for attracting beneficial insects to control or minimize the effects of herbivorous insects.Chinese and American species of Catalpa are closely related,and have greater numbers of nectaries in more locations on the lower leaf surface than west Indian species.Herbivory pressures in the West Indies are postulated to be lower than on the continents,i.e.Asia and North America.
