Deng Xiaoping made a great contribution to the science of international law, which is shown in the following aspects: his expounding of the five principles of peaceful coexistence and its guiding role;
Those problems mainly involve the following aspects: the lack of full recognition of the role and function of international law and international law studies, the pragmatism and utilitarianism in international law studies, the disconnection between international law studies and domestic law studies, the weak foundation of international law studies, and the temporary shortage of qualified international law researchers.
The solution of those problems not only needs the correct understanding of and supportive environment to international law and its studies, but also ultimately relies on the joint efforts of all people involved in the international law studies.
This paper suggests that as a new research direction International Relations(IR)and International Law Studies(ILS)should be re-shaped within the context of globalization and on the basis of China's need to cope with the complex international challenges and to accept responsibilities in conjunction with global trends.

Elements of International Law was the first western work on international law translated into Chinese language. The earliest edition existing today is the one published by Chongshi Publishing House in 1964. This book, for the first time in history, introduced to China basic principles, ideas, concepts and terminology of modern international law. It played an important role in enlightenment of Chinese academic circle and contributed directly to the birth of modern international law in China.
