Indentation techniques by means of the Vickers indentation crack measurement or theKnoop indentation-strength method have been used for determining fracture toughness ofceramics.Structural ceramics,such as reaction-bonded Si_3N_4,hot-pressed Si_3N_4 and SiC,have been used for investigating the influence of microstructural heterogeneity and thermalresidual stresses on fracture toughness.Artificial quartz has been used for researching therelationship between crystal orientation and fracture toughness.It has been found that theKnoop indentation-strength method is rather suitable to the determination of fracturetoughness than the Vickers indentation crack measurement for non-isometrical crystals.This is for the reason that both the major Knoop indentation crack and the crack of thenotched specimen would propagate along the same crystal plane,but the pair of Vickersradial cracks has to propagate along the orthogonal crystal planes,only one of themalong the same plane as that the crack of notched specimen along.On the basis of the Vickers indentation technique,Evans' expression(21)withoutincluding the modulus of elasticity,E,by means of which the values of K_(1c) have beencalculated,seems to be available to show the influence of microstructural factors on thevalues of K_(1c).Evans' expression(22)with the modulus of elasticity in it,seems to beappreciable to show the effect of thermal residual stresses on the values of K_(1c).The cor-relation coefficients of linear regression of the relationship between Vickers indentation andradial crack,a~2-C~(3/2),are even more than 0.99 for all the ceramics mentioned above,exceptfor reaction-bonded Si_3N_4.This means that the Vickers indentation technique can be usedto determine the fracture toughness for ceramic materials with a certain effectiveness.

The crack growth resistance behavior of Al_(2)O_(3)+ZrO_(2)monolayer and laminated ceramics were determined by indentation-strength method. The properties of thermal shock resistance of these two materials were also estimated by indentation method. The relationship between the R-curve, the thermal shock resistance properties and the mechanism of strengthening and toughening were studied. The crack growth resistance behavior of Al_(2)O_(3)+ZrO_(2)monolayer and laminated ceramics were determined by indentation-strength method. The properties of thermal shock resistance of these two materials were also estimated by indentation method. The relationship between the R-curve, the thermal shock resistance properties and the mechanism of strengthening and toughening were studied. The results indicate that the Al_(2)O_(3)+ZrO_(2)laminated ceramics is not sensitive to the surface cracks. Indentation thermal shock test shows that the critical temperature difference of the Al_(2)O_(3)+ZrO_(2 )laminated ceramics is 400 ℃, which is 150 ℃ higher than those of monolayer ceramics. The fracture resistant mechanism and thermal shock resistance of the two materials are closely related to strengthening and toughing mechanisms.The R-curve and thermal shock resistance properties are improved and the transformation effect are strengthened by the surface compressive stress effect.

压痕强度法获得了Al2O3+ZrO2单层和层状陶瓷的表面抗裂纹曲线,用压痕法测试了2种材料的抗热震性能,分析了材料的表面抗裂纹行为、抗热震性与断裂形貌,强韧化之间的相关性。实验结果表明:Al2O3+ZrO2层状陶瓷对表面裂纹表现出不敏感性,临界热震温差为400℃,高出单层陶瓷150℃左右。进一步分析表明:2种陶瓷的表面抗裂纹及抗热震性能与材料的强韧化机制密切相关。表面压应力作用强化了相变增韧效果,改善了材料的表面抗裂纹性能和抗热震稳定性等力学性能。
