After reviewing the methods for the resistance estimation of ships, it is seen that the total resistance should be taken as a criterion for the method of estimation, and the method must be very simple in order to facilitate the computation of influences of principal dimensions and coefficients upon resistance in the preliminary design. Based on the analysis of test results of DTMB Series 60, the author has investigated systematic model tests published in recent years by different tanks, and suggests a new simplified...

Based on the analysis of test results of DTMB Series 60, the author has investigated systematic model tests published in recent years by different tanks, and suggests a new simplified method for the estimation of ship resistance. If only the resistance data of parent ship is known, the resistance of the new design may immediately be obtained. The influences of four main factors, such as block coefficient, length-breadth ratio, breadth-draft ratio and length on the resistance coefficient are considered. Supposing the total resistance coefficient of the parent ship be R_c, then the resistance coefficient of the new design R_c will be R'_c=R_c+(△R_c)δ+(△R_c)_(L/B)+(△R_c)_(B/T)+(△R_c)_L where (△R_c)δ, (△R_c)_(L/B), (△R_c)_(b/t) and (△R_c)_L are the corrections for the changes in block coefficient, length-breadth ratio, breadth-draft ratio and length respectively. The calculations of worked examples are given in the paper. (C) estimation method is given in the appendix. The proposed method is applicable to single-screw merchant ships of δ = 0.60~0.75, L/B=6.0~ 8.5, B/T= 2.0~3.5 and L=60~150m.

A new shipform of flat bow and cochlea-channeled stern is described which is a development and crafty combination of the "flat bow shipform" of ancient China and the "cochlea-channeled stern shipform" developed by Giovanni B. Tommasi in the '70s.Comparative tests on the ship models show that when =2.8-3.4, the resistance to the new ship is decreased by 25-40%, the wave height from the bow is decreased by more than 60%, propulsive efficiency is increased by 35-45% and power of the engine can be saved in the amount of 35-45%. Judging by the excellent performance the new shipform possesses, it can well be said that it is a promising inland river shipform.The influence of the bow and stern on ship performance is discussed, the abnormal phenomena observed during investigation are analysed and theoretical inferences made. The first full-scale ship's trial trip is also treated.
