It has been discovered that the heterosis of yield is higher in early-maturing combinations than in late-maturing ones. In order to suit the needs of early-maturing cotton varieties in wheat-cotton cropping areas and extra-early cotton belts in north China, We suggest that we should focus our main attention on the selection of early-maturing intraspecific hybrids of upland cotton, and introduce early-maturing interspecific hybrids of upland cotton and sea-island cotton. In the meantime, certain cultivation techniques of hybrid cotton cultivars should be studied as well.

各国科学家对四倍体海岛棉、陆地棉及二倍体中棉、草棉的不同熟期品种进行种内或种间杂交的大量研究结果表明:早熟或中早熟间的杂种优势高于晚熟或中晚熟间的杂种优势。根据我国目前生产上麦后(套)棉与前作的季节冲突及北方特早熟棉区对早熟品种的需求,提出利用我国杂交棉研究和应用的基础优势及早熟杂交棉自身所具有的特点,进行陆地棉种内早熟杂交种的研究,同时引进早熟海陆杂交种进行种植及配套栽培技术的研究,从而为麦后(套)棉地区及北方特早熟棉区提供早熟丰产及优质抗病的杂交棉花品种。
