The software design scheme of bay level IED based on IEC 61850 is studied, the function model of IED analyzed and the module composition of software designed. The principles and implementing methods of such key technologies as UML design of the object model, XML, communication modes of GOOSE, SAV, GSSE message and multi-task running are studied. Some references are put forward for the product development of the new IEDs obeying IEC 61850.
