    An unique physical parameter for describing the stress level of an earthquake region is deduced on the basis of macroscopic shear fracture conditions of a fault in accordance with the theory that earthquakes are originated by fault displacements. The physical process of seismic activity ha been studied in detail. Due to the lack of the necessary original data, difficulties have been encountered in the study of the earthquake sequences deterministically. For the present state of understanding, earthquake prediction by b-value may be considered as promising in evaluating earthquake hazard.Several physical models are suggested. The physical background of the variation, of the b-value has been analysed in detail. A relation of b-value with the tectonic conditions and the stress level of an earthquake region has been deduced. Based on such result, one may be able to explain certain empirical relation and the range of variation of the b-value observed in practice more satisfactorily. If further observations-should support such result, it could provide valuable informations for earthquake-prediction.

    The basin at the mouth of Pearl River is a large sedimentary basin primarily of Tertiary origin, having undergone three stages of evolution: from late Cretaceous to early Oligocene, from middle Oligocene to early Miocene and from middle Miocene to Quarternary. The basic structural patterns formed in the basin include three types of depression and two types of uplift, either of fluviolacustrine, or of semi-closed sea, or of open sea deposition. They have plentiful oil source, good reservoir properties and excellent capping and trapping conditions very well associated. All this suggests that the basin at the mouth of Pearl River is provided with the basic structural conditions to form a large oil and gas basin with great potentialities.

    Through analyzing aeromagnetic anomalies relating to oil/gas traps, according to their geological origins, we might classify them into three types of strueture involved anomalies. The first class of them is related to volcanic layers. The second one is related to the uplifted blocks of bed rock, Whereas the third is related to sedimentary anticlines,Moreover, a large number of examples in this connection are given. And a minute description to each of them is also given respectively in the paper.
