In the 50-day-old embryo, the endothelial cells have much cytoplasm containing numerous organelles. The apposing endothelial cell membranes form long and tortuous junctional complex. Villous cytoplasmic processes project into the lumen of the vessel. The basement membrane first appears as a thin irregular band and grows thicker but the endothelial cells become thinner. In normal adults, the basement membrane is homogenous, moderately thick, within it are occasional pericytes. In malignant brain tumors, endothelial cells are seen with much more villous projections and vesicles. The basement membrane is irregular and a large extracellular space may surround the capillary. The above findings are related to the development and impairment of the blood-brain barrier.
