Chinese students have often been perceived as passive and dependent learners. But we believe that given encouragement, some guidance and an appropriate context, Chinese students can be both verbally and cognitively active, and also independent and creative in their participation and learning. This development also depends on how teachers involve them and model for them active, independent and creative learning. This paper uses a case study of the teaching and learning of a course at a university in Hong Kong to show how students were guided towards autonomous learning and active participation. The study findings indicate that Chinese students are able to learn actively and creatively when the teaching is adapted to transform their learning to the performance expected and demonstrates how they may achieve this performance. With the increasing recognition of the need for active, creative and independent learning in the Chinese education curriculum, this study shows how essential it is for teachers to teach actively and creatively. Thus developing independent learners is a challenge for teachers themselves.

西方学生相比 ,中国学生常被认为是被动型、依赖型的学生。但是我们认为如果在恰当的情况下给与鼓励、指导 ,中国学生既可以在口头表达上与认知活动上活跃起来 ,也可以在参与学习活动时表现出独立性与创造性。这有赖于教师引导学生独立地有创造性地学习 ,并做出示范。本文以香港中文大学的一门课程为例 ,展示教师是怎样引导学生自主学习并积极参与学习活动的。研究结果表明 ,当教师力图通过课程学习改变学生学习方式并且在课程中予以示范与引导的时候 ,学生是如何取得预期学习成果的。中国教育正在逐渐增强对积极的富有创造性的独立学习的认识 ,本研究力求显示教师积极地、有创造性地、独立地教学的重要意义所在。因此 ,发展独立性学习者是对教师自身的挑战。
