In the present work the anticancer and immune-stimulation effect with the extracts from Asparagus Officinalis linn werestudied. We have found that Asparagus can inhibit colony growing in certainconcentrations, of human nasopharyngeal cancer CNE cells, humancervical cancer HeLa cells, human esophageal cancer Eca-109 cells as wellas mouse pulmonary adenocarcinoma LA-795 cells. The cytotoxic effectof Asparagus increased with the concentration or the time of exposure toit. There was a little difference in the pattern of the survival curves.The most sensitive cells to the drug were LA-795 (D_0=1. 3%), then CNEcells and HeLa cells (D_0=2. 1% and 2. 6% respectively), the Eca-109 cellsappeared to have a larger value of D_0(4. 4%). The effective concentrationwas about 12% Asparagus. The growth of solid tumor of pulmonary adenocarcinoma in LA-739mice could be layed by Asparagus and the doubling time of tumorregrowth delay was determined to be 4 days. The ER was about 1. 5. Asparagus is a biological respollse modifier at lower concentration(0. 1-1. 0%). Our experimental results showed that Asparagus couldstimulate the proliferation of peripheral lymphocyte and the effect ofIL-2 may be doubled if used in combination with Asparagus. The effectof immunal stimulation was similar in mice, normal subjects, and cancerpatients.
