The present study investigates postcolonial discourse from the perspective of postcolonial theory. The concept of postcolonial English is presented with detailed description of its characteristics. In an effort to move beyond linguistic or communicative competence as the primary goal of English education, this article makes an attempt to combine these approaches in a common theme, that is, proposing intercultural competence as the primary goal of English education in a postcolonial context.

国际经济全球化的日益加强正促进就业市场朝着全球化的方向发展。既能掌握一门专业知识 ,又具有英语实际应用能力和国际市场知识 ,并能适应国际市场竞争的复合型人才是中国经济走向世界和中国经济进一步发展的关键 ,也是中国高等教育的主要目标。按照传统的大学英语教学模式培养出来的非英语专业的毕业生的英语口头和书面交际能力上很难达到经济全球化背景下用人单位的有关要求。讨论了中国高等教育机构全面改革当前大学英语教育模式的必要性 ,提出了实施全面改革的基本思路和可采取的一些措施。
