The significance of this picture to the history study of ancient Chinese Costume has not been fully recognized by many scholars, including those who had cited this picture in their researches. Some points about the way that women dressed in their time show in that picture were neglected. The high waistline-over-bust had been very popular during Sui & Tang. The trend had gone much longer than people believed had and there was a process of changing from slim and straight to full with round shape. The change of silhouette reflected the development of female's ideal image, from simple to sophisticated.

The goal of this research is to describe and analyze Shanghai's fashion during Late Qing Dynasty (the 1840's-1911). In the paper, The formation and development of Shanghai as the fashion center of China, the men's fashion and women's fashion in Shanghai will be discussed. The style, textiles, color, decoration and combination of clothing will be described. The social psychology of fashion and fashion leaders will also be covered as well. Many historical writings, paintings and photographs as well as some costumes...

The goal of this research is to describe and analyze Shanghai's fashion during Late Qing Dynasty (the 1840's-1911). In the paper, The formation and development of Shanghai as the fashion center of China, the men's fashion and women's fashion in Shanghai will be discussed. The style, textiles, color, decoration and combination of clothing will be described. The social psychology of fashion and fashion leaders will also be covered as well. Many historical writings, paintings and photographs as well as some costumes from private collections and museums will be used in the paper to give a description about Shanghai's fashion looks during that period. Here are some tentative conclusions. Firstly, Shanghai had been developing gradually into the fashion center of China since 1860's. The Chinese word Shimao fully reflected the popularity of clothing in Shanghai. The city was also characteristic of following Shimao. Secondly, fashion of traditional clothing was highly stylized, gorgeous, exquisite, miscellaneous, detailed, multicolored and even strange. Thirdly, the Western clothing made more impact on that of Shanghai than other regions of China. The Western styles were more popularly adopted in men's fashion than in women's. Women seldom wore Western dress in their daily life. Lastly, the so-called Shanghai Style came into being, which incorporated characteristics of both past and present, combining that of China and abroad. It could be also described as unconventional or unorthodox, garish as well as changed quickly. Shanghai's fashion during Late Qing Dynasty really composed a prelude to admitting and adopting Western style completely in fashion of China.

晚清上海服饰时尚在中国服饰史上具有特殊地位。通过对文献、画报和照片以及来自博物馆和私人收藏的实物的分析及相互印证 ,对时尚中心的形成和发展、男装服饰时尚和女装服饰时尚等主题 ,就流行风貌、款式、面料、色彩、装饰和服饰配伍等展开研究 ,有关服饰流行心理以及时尚领袖等也一并加以讨论 ,并得到如下结论 :(1)从 186 0年代起 ,上海逐渐居于晚清中国的时尚中心地位 ,“时髦”是当时上海服饰流行的集中写照。追求时髦成了上海的城市特性。(2 )传统服饰时尚可以概括为高度风格化、精致化、多主题、多色彩 ,追求华丽 ,讲究细节 ,强调新奇。(3)西式服饰体系的影响逐步上升 ,这种趋势在上海远较中国其他地区明显 ,对西式因素的运用在男装中远较女装普遍。(4)上海服饰时尚开始形成所谓“海派”的包容古今兼蓄中外、讲究炫耀追逐时髦、标新立异变化迅速的独有风格 ,并拉开了中国服饰流行逐步与西方服饰体系并轨的序幕。

The phenomenon of women's wearing men's suit in Tang dynasty is a flashing point in China' s attire history. This article analyzes the phenomenon from the aspects of openness and brilliance of Tang society and points out that the appearance of phenomenon is the option of history and the necessity of age.
