Although these osmolytes or osmoprotectors have quite diverse structures, most of them can be determined by anion-exchange chromatography combined with integrated pulsed amperometric detection.
      


A new method, anion exchange chromatography integrated pulse amperometry, is described for direct analysis of amino acids without derivatization. The method is rapid, sensitive, simple and convenient. For most common amino acids, the detection limit is less than l pmol, and the range of linearity is over three orders of magnitude.
