The purpose of the present article is to make an initial study of themorphology of the upper bainite of 0.55 pet C-Si-Mn-Mo steel,The resultsare obtained through various test methods,such as optical microscope,x-raydiffraction,scanning and transmission electron microscopes,and compact tensiontest.The transformation during tempering affects the mechanical properties ofthe said steel.According to the results of the tests,the said medium carbon alloy steel,after being austenitized at 900℃ for half an hour and cooled in air,showsan upper bainite structure composed of ferrite and 30~35% austenite richin carbon forming parallel interlaced layers,As shown by the simple dilatometermeasurements,when the temperieg tmeperature reaches about 400℃,themicrostructure of the steel contains ferrite,carbide and 5% austenite.Theauthors suggest the name for such a structure-“tempered bainite.”It isfound that the rate of propagation of cracks,da/dN,increases with the increaseof the tempering temperature,maximum value being reached at about 400℃.Scanning electron microscope examination shows that the fractured surfaceschanges from the quasi-cleavage type to the cleavage type.

It is shown that the martensite and carbide formed in weld junctionsand overheated zones as well as the coarse grains in the overheated zones are themain factors responsible for the welded joint fracture. The intersection of numerousdeforming twins in the overheated zones during deformation and their impactagainst phase boundaries also leads to an initiation of cracks. thus promoting thebrittle fracture of the welded joints.

The morphology of upper bainite in a 55SiMnMo steel under normalized condition as well as its transformation in tempering has been observed by optical microscopy, TEM, SEM and X-ray diffraction. After austenitising at 900℃ for 1/2h and A. C., the upper bainite resulted was composed of ferrite and 30—35% carbon enriched austenite platelet, however, no carbide appeared until tempering treatment. The tempering temperature for carbide precipitation was found to be 400℃, and the tempering products, so called "tempered bainite", consist of ferrite, carbide and 3—5% austenite. The rate of crack propagation da/dN of the steel increases with the increase of tempering temperature and reaches its maximum at about 400℃, accompanied with relevant change of fracture type from the quasicleavage to the cleavage.
