Dozens of alkalophilic bacterial strains, which produce extracellular alkali tolerant β glycanases, were isolated from alkaline soil. A strain was obtained and named as A 30, which exhibited high activity of β glycanase and was preliminarily identified as Bacillus pumilus . The optimum pH of the crude cellulase and xylanase was 7.6 and 9.0 ,and the optimum temperatures was 60℃ and 55℃, respectively. The effects of various carbon sources on β glycanase production were investigated. The highest level of cellulase activity was induced on the medium containing sorbose and the highest level of xylanase activity was found on the medium containing xylan. When wheat bran was used as carbon sources, the optimum concentration was 5%. Cellulase and xylanase activities were highly improved by adding urine and (NH 4) 2SO 4 to the medium. Other optimum culture conditions were initial pH 8.0, 28~32 ℃ and shaking at 150 rpm. Incubated in the optimum medium for about 60 hours, the highest cellulase activity was found 1.21 IU mL -1 , and xylanase activity 443 IU mL -1 .
