Investigation done in this paper is the retardation effect of a single tensile overloading on the fatigue crack growth rate of on axial through crack in 16 Mn steel pressure vessels. The strees ratio, R, of baseline load was zero. The fatigue crack growth rates without overloading were regressed with the crack tip opening displacement ranges. Experimental results on overloading with plate specimens have been verlified in pressure vessels. To test the feasibility, the Willenborg model and the Matsuoka modul for pressure vessel were studied critically. The use of the Matsuoka model for the estimation of the retardation effect in pressure vessels may be recommended. Present authors would suggest that the maximum overload might be determined by considering the three factors jointly as the following: whether the crack will be unstable; whether gross yielding of the pressure vessel will occur; and how large the range of the extent of crack ligament yielding would be.
