An earthquake of M = 6.1 occurred in the Sinfengkiang Reservoir region, Kwan-tung Province on March 19, 1962. This paper analyses the variations of the velocity ratio Vp/Vs during the 14 years subsequent to 1961, in particular within the interval immediately prior to and following the main shock. The results show that before the main shock a negative anomaly of the velocity ratio VP/VS appeared. It lasted about 11 months. The velocity ratio returned to its normal value about 11/2 months in ahead of the main shock. The amplitude of the negative anomaly becomes a maximum in a locality near the epicenter of the main shock within a deep-water gorge. It can be seen that the duration and the spatial extent of the velocity ratio anomaly is smaller than those of an ordinary non-reservoir impounding earthquake.Before some of the after shocks occurring in the later part of the 14-year period, anomalies in velocity ratio are also observed. The virtual velocity too shows anomalous features before the main shock. All of these facts thus mentioned could possibly be explained by the dilatancy model.The method for calculating the values of VP/Vs is taken from M. Ohtake's paper and that for the virtual velocity has been worked out by the author.

The occurrence of the Tangshan earthquake might be caused by continued accumulation of the bending strain of the syneline which resulted in fracturing or fault plane slidin.) By this model thecontroversy between the source mechanism of the Tangshan earthquake and the mechanics of the Neocathaysian system cnn be explained.

At the magistoseismic area and both ends of it, the changes of anomaly having occurred somewhat late come to a maximum values. For the surroundings of the magistoseismic area the peak of anomaly arising earlier decreases gradually. The change of anomaly shows a tendency to extend gradually toward the epicenter from the surroundings; it goes with an interval, to result in a few of clusters of peaks.We have presented some empirical regularities to determine the epicenter, magnitude, time of earthquake occurrence and the depth of hypocenters in terms of these characteristics in question. It is of practical significance in telling the disturbances from the seismic anomalies. The writer assumed that the predisplacements prior to the quake and the interlayer decoupling are the cause of the ground water anomalies by which the physical process for the development of ground water anomalies may be interpreted. The parameters for the ground water anomalies and the differences in the presence of hydro-geological background have been analyzed by the two mechnisms.
