Sodium formate was used as a scavenger for H and OH to identify the radical formed by hydrated electron. The transient thymine radicals were spin-trapped by tert-nitrosobutane and detected by electron spin resonance spectrometer. Three thymine radicals were observed in our experiment.

This discrepancy is interpreted by supposing a dual role of the sensitization product, which can act in the process of latent image formation both as electron trap and as hole trap. In a model emulsion as used in the present work, the silver halide grains represent, before chemical sensitization, a highly regular structure in which electron traps do not exist to any considerable extent, and hence the hole traps dominate because of the presence of adsorbed gelatin as a halogen acceptor. Under these circumstances, as the chemical ripening process proceeds, the sensitization product, though a "dual" trap, should lead to an increase in the concentration of electron traps relative to that of hole traps. This will prevent electrons from recombining with positive holes. The latter can then freely interact with dye molecules adsorbed on the grains to form dye free radicals which are believed to be responsible for the photo-induced ESE signal of the emulsion. If, on the contrary, electron traps axe preponderant in the primitive emulsion, as might be the case with most of practically used emulsions, the increase in hole trap concentration during chemical ripening will become more important than that in electron trap concentration, and will thus invoke a decrease in photo-induced ESR signal intensity.

One of the columns is a home-made graphite carbon black glass capillary column and the other is a packed pre-column.In a modified SP-2305E model Gas Chromato-graph, glass capillary column was used as the main separation column with FID. In the same thermostat oven there was a packed pre-columu with TCD. The two separated gas ways of the two columns were joined by a micro-sixway-valve The intermediate trap which was a stainless steel tube with 0.3-0.5mm inner diameter was coupled to the micro-sixway-valve diagonally. The coolant was liquid nitrogen. The collected components were heated with a large current (8A) at lower voltage (6V) for 0.3-0.5 second to do the "re-injection" instantaneously.Twenty impurities in chloromethane have been identified by means of GC-MES (Micro Wave plasma Emission Spectra), GC-MS, and pure component identification by two columns. These were methanol, chloroform and toluene etc. The front part, tail part and "heart-cutting" of the main chloromethane peak leaving the pre-column were collected and re-injected, respectively. Bad resolution peaks and an unknown peak were also switched and re-injected, respectively. Six figures, one table and six references are given.
