A review was made on the development of diagnostic techniques for tree crops since the 20th century,especially those literature appeared in Chinese publications.In view of the fact that the growth habits as well as the nutri- tional characteristics of tree crops are different from those of annual crops the following recommendations may be helpful to those scientists and pomologists as well as civiculturists who are interested in diagnostic work. 1.More researches should be endeavored in discovering the general as well as the special principles of tree and organ nutrition. 2.Long-term fertilizing experiments should be carried out aiming at the calibration of soil test and plant analysis,in order to predict the sig- nificant correlation between soil nutrients status and tree nutrients concen- tration as well as target nutrients concentration. 3.On the basis of the merits and disadvantages of different diagnostic systems new improvements should be made on the sampling techniques,labo- ratory analysis and data treatments so that a recommendation and diagnosis integrated system should be modeled in achieving higher prediction and greater economical efficiency.
