Multilevel converters are a novel kind of converters used in high voltage and high power application field. And its corresponding topology and PWM method are two research hot points. According to state of the art,it is a reasonable selection that using a cascaded multilevel converter topology controlled by triangle carried based PWM, when voltage level is more than three. Based on this point of view, the paper discusses three existing kinds of triangle carrier based PWM strategies firstly. Their principle, advantages and disadvantages are compared each other. Then a new kind of PWM strategy is presented, which is suitable for cascade multilevel converters. In order to compare the control effects of them, some simulations have been done by Saber simulation software. The simulation results show the proposed PWM method has many advantages of the three kinds of PWM method mentioned above, especially in output voltage harmonic and voltage utility ratio aspects. In the last part of the paper, some suggestions on future research are given.

The paper presents the idea of control degrees of freedom combination. Aiming to optimization of system performance and utilizing multiple control degrees of freedom available in multilevel inverters, two novel practicalcarrier-based multilevel PWM methods are proposed. The idea of control degrees of freedom combination and the validity of the novel PWM strategies are demonstrated by simulation and experimentation of three-level inverter and five-level inverter. The simulation and experimentation results indicate that the idea of control degrees of freedom combination is an important clue to realize the high performance multilevel inverter and the two novel PWM strategies exhibit the good harmoniccharacteristics or higher DC bus utilization than conventional multilevel PWM methods.

提出了控制自由度组合的思想,利用多电平逆变器中多个控制自由度及其相互组合,以系统的性能指标优化为目标,提出了两种新型的具有实际意义的多电平逆变器载波PWM控制方法。为了验证所提出的控制自由度组合的思想和新型的PWM控制方法,对二极管箝位型三电平逆变器和五电平逆变器进行了仿真和实验研究。结果表明,文中两种新型的PWM控制方法在低调制度下具有比常规的多电平PWM方法更优越的谐波特性或更高的直流电压利用率。
