Sugar consumption and ethanol yield were 92.5 % and 85.0 %, respectively, when pentose rich spent sulfite liquor (SSL) was fermented in a 1.5 L fermentor, the oxygen absorption rate of cells was 1.24~1.48 mmol/L·h and the dissolved oxygen coefficient (K La) was 147.5~180 h -1 . The reducing substances were decreased from 22.90 g/L to 5.90 g/L in SSL and ethanol concentration was 0.74 %(v/v) after 22 h fermentation at air rate 4 m 3/h. To raise or reduce the air rate will decrease the ethanol yield.
