The author pointed out that the minimal length of stemming in smooth blasting is associated with stemming materials, rock properties and geometric parameters of blasthole, the effect of stemming with middle-size sand is much better than that with clay. For the smooth blast with small diameter hole(40-50mm),the minimal length of stemming needn't be greater than holespacing. It may be 40% of the holespacing for soft rock, 60% for temperately hard rock and 80% for the hardest rock.
