The 20th century is a period that modern higher education of China emerged and developed. The opposition and unification in the educational goal of general education and specialist education, which advanced with the age and passed many evolvement, have the function of programatics and guidance in respect of colleges and universities' curriculum, teaching, and so on. It is an important entrance to the study of higher education's modernization course. The knowledge classification and subject differentiation is one of the important foundations of the modern higher education's emergence. The emergence of colleges and universities, which aims to cultivate senior professionals, is the symbol of Chinese higher education's launching on modernization. But now, the detailedly divided specialist education or professional education has no longer met the request of the era. The conflict between general education and specialist education in higher education today, has already evolved into a disposal of the relation between general education and professional education - that is , to seek the equipoise and combination between them in colleges and universities' curriculum system. The undergraduate education may take on a trend, namely "professional education - general education introduced into professional education - professional education based on general education". The primary mission of general education is to develop the students' consciousness and ability of lifelong persisting self examination and advancing their philosophies.

2 0世纪是中国现代高等教育的发生发展时期 ,其培养目标上的通才教育与专才教育的对立统一 ,对高等学校的课程和教学等方面具有纲领性、导向性作用 ,是研究高等教育现代化进程的重要切入口。知识分类、学科分化是现代高等教育产生的重要基础之一。而现在 ,那种划分非常细密的专才教育或专业教育 ,已经不能适应时代的要求。当今高等教育的通专才教育之争 ,已经演变为通识教育与专业教育关系的处理 ,即在高等学校的课程体系中寻求二者的均衡点与结合点。大学本科教育可能呈现“专业教育———在专业教育中引进通识教育———通识教育基础上的专业教育”的改革趋势。通识教育的根本使命是要发展学生终身不懈的自我反思 ,提升人生观的意识与能力
