The function of the antagonistic concentrio type receptive field is simulated by means of a dual vidicon system working in synchronism. The function of the antagonistic concentrio type receptive field is simulated by means of a dual vidicon system working in synchronism. The information from the field center is obtained from a vidicon tube with sharply focused electron beam for the sweep, while that from the surround, by a defocused beam sweeping across another tube. The antagonistic action of the center and surround can be realized by feeding the outputs of the two vidicon systems to the differential inputs of an amplifier. Through manipulating the sizes of the 'center' and 'surround' beam (by varying the degree of focussing) and the sensitivities of the two channels (by changing the gains of the vidio amplifiers), the Mach bands can be shown and the edges and/or corners of a figure can be brought out prominently.
