The heights of rain formation in cumulus clouds with various vertical velocities, microstructures and cloud base temperatures are calculated, using a warm-rain formation model. The calculated results agree fairly with the observed heights of the cumulus clouds with 50% probability of raining in many regions in the world It is found that the rain formation heights differ appreciably and depend mainly upon the vertical velocity and to less degree on microstracture and cloud base temperature.

The natural development of warm cumulus and its evolution after salt-seeding are studied by using an one-dimensional time-dependent model. Calculations show that the life-time and rainfall amount of cumulus are closely related with the change of the surface temperature. For those cumuli whose life-time is short and updraft decays rapidly, the natural rainfall amount is small and the effect of salt-seeding is obvious. In most cases the increase of rainfall amount due to seeding reaches 50% or more of its natural...

Calculations show that the life-time and rainfall amount of cumulus are closely related with the change of the surface temperature. For those cumuli whose life-time is short and updraft decays rapidly, the natural rainfall amount is small and the effect of salt-seeding is obvious. In most cases the increase of rainfall amount due to seeding reaches 50% or more of its natural rainfall. On the other hand, for those cumuli whose updraft keeps for a long time, the original rainfall amount is large and the seeding effect is insignificant. Even on some occasions the rainfall amount slightly decreases due to seeding. Calculations also show that rain can be stimulated by salt-seeding from some cumuli which did not rain naturally. In such a case, the longer the natural life-time is, the larger the artificial rainfall amount is. The mechanism for rain-enhancement by salt-seeding in warm cumulus is discussed. The optimum seeding rate, lacation, time and the optimum size of salt particles are also examined.
