The solvent extraction of several lanthanide radionuclides(144Ce, 147Nd, 152+154Eu,170Tm and 169Yb) from aqueous picric acid solutions with 4-methyl-benzo-15-crown-5 in chloroform has been investigated. The extracted species are found to be 1:2:3 (metal/crown/picrate) complex from slope analysis. The extraction equilibrium constants (Kex) have been determined at 25°C. The order of Kex values for trivalent lanthanide is Nd3+>Eu3+> Ce3+ >Tm3+ >Yb3+ . This indicates that the ionic size of Nd3+(r = 0.995A) may better match the cavity size of 4-methylbenzo-15-crown-5 than the ionic sizes of other lanthanides.In order to compare lanthanides with actinides, the extractability of 4-methylbenzo-15-crown-5 for Th4+, UO22+ and Am3+ has been determined. The sequence is Th4+(##Nd3+)Am3+(##Ce3+)UO22+.Therefore, 4-methyl-benzo-15-crown-5 may be a useful reagent for separating uranium from thorium in the liquid-liquid extraction method.The effect of solvents and additives on the extraction has also been investigated. The extent of the extraction of lanthanides may be improved by addition of n-butanol or iso-pentanol to the organic phase, or by application of more polar solvent (e. g., nitrobenzene) instead ofchloroform.

The extraction of lanthanide picrate complexes with two derivatives of benzo-15-crown-5 into nitrobenzene and chloroform has been investigated. The determination of distribution ratios of seven lanthanides was carried out using their γ-radioactive isotopes as tracers and their γ-spectra were determined by high purity Ge-detector and a multichannel analyser.The extractability of the seven 4-tert-butylbenzo-15-crown -5 (t-BBC) complexes follows the following sequence: CeEu>Tm>Yb>Lu with a maximum at Sm....

The extraction of lanthanide picrate complexes with two derivatives of benzo-15-crown-5 into nitrobenzene and chloroform has been investigated. The determination of distribution ratios of seven lanthanides was carried out using their γ-radioactive isotopes as tracers and their γ-spectra were determined by high purity Ge-detector and a multichannel analyser.The extractability of the seven 4-tert-butylbenzo-15-crown -5 (t-BBC) complexes follows the following sequence: CeEu>Tm>Yb>Lu with a maximum at Sm. The polyether-cationic complexes were found to be of a 2:1 stoichiometry and the formation of a "sandwich" structure with a probable composition of Ln (t-BBC)2Pi3 seems indicated.The average value of separation factor is 1.14 for Ce and Sm, and 0.76 for Sm and Lu.The distribution ratio of lanthanides with t-BBC were twice as that with 4-bromo- benzo-15-crown-5. If chloroform is used as the diluent instead of nitrobenzene, the distribution ratio will decrease 20-fold.The addition of α-hydroxy-isobutyric acid into the aqueous phase can increase the separation factors for the heavy mass lanthanides.
