Large zircon particles are transformed into zirconia agglomerates (≈50μm) after complete decomposition during the thermal treatment. The formation of isolated pores is closely related to the ZrO_2 agglomerates. Some characteristics of the microstructure of the sintered mullite-zirconia composites added with MgCl_2·6H_2O are: zirconia can be aggregated or comparatively well distributed; almost all isolated pores closely locate to the ZrO_2 agglomerates; on the phase boundaries of mullite-zirconia, solid solution difusion with concentration gradient is observed, indicating their direct bonding.
