A converter topology applied for brushless starter/generator double function system,named C dump converter is introduced. Its basic principles under generative operation mode are studied. Some problems about the low using ratio of generator phase current and the large volume of filter inductance to the converter are analyzed. Therefore an improved converter topology is presented to solve these problems. The lowest operating rotor speed limitation and operating characteristics of the generative system based on the improved converter are discussed in detail. The results indicate that the generative system has very wide range of operating rotor speed and better output characteristics, and the converter has advantages in efficiency compared to other converters when it is applied for aircraft generative system.

The brushless direct current motor speeding system based on a novel type converter——C dump converter is systematically studied. Because the topology of C dump converter is different from the conventional three phase H bridge converter, the principle and the control scheme of the system are discussed, including motor operation and regenerative operation modes in both directions. Design considerations for some key parameters of C dump converter are too given. Moreover, to achieve the current speed double loop control without a speed sensor, this paper presents the method of obtaining the speed feedback by detecting the electromagnetic force(EMF)in the non conducting phases. Exact speed feedback enables system to work normally. And the experimental results confirm the four quadrant operation and the excellent operation characteristics of the system.[KH3/4D]
