A study on the depth of tank and mechanical stirring was made by means of physical modeling, and an investigation on temperature field, velocity field, and glass current distribution in the model tank with the application of physical modeling combined with other partition devices was also carried out. Some suggestions on the improvement of the construction of float glass tank furnace and on energy-saving have thus been proposed.The experimental results show that reduoing the depth of conditioning zone is effective on lowering the temperature in that area; a 1 to 1.2 M deep conditioning zone is appropriate; a stirrer mounted at neck can improve the heat distribution of molten glass and drop the temperature in conditioning zone; the combined device is more effective in lowering temperature than the device which has either shallow tank or stirrer only. When shallow tank and narrow neck are used together with a double-frame stirrer the optimum cooling result can be obtained.
