The foreign language education of the United States has gone through several historical periods, starting from the North American colonial period and developing to its present—day prosperity. In the period of the British colonial regime, modern foreign language education began to show signs of a positive outcome. After the war of independence, schools attached much imporatance to the cultivation of the students' ability of foreign language, and the foreign language education of the country began to grow. The foreign language education of the United States has gone through several historical periods, starting from the North American colonial period and developing to its present—day prosperity. In the period of the British colonial regime, modern foreign language education began to show signs of a positive outcome. After the war of independence, schools attached much imporatance to the cultivation of the students' ability of foreign language, and the foreign language education of the country began to grow. Form World War Ⅰ to 1952, the United Stated was affected by the postwar isolationist sentiment upon the teaching of foreign languages. Modern foreign language education was landed into trouble. In the meantime, Leonard Bloomfield initiated stimulus—response (S—R) theories of learning. Behaviorism caught on quite quickly in the United States, exercising important influence over and giving great impetus to the development of the foreign language education of the country. From 1952 to the late sixties, modern foreign language education in the United States made much headway. In the period between the late sixties and late seventies, the concern of the people shifted to social problems. The language requirement was once again discarded, and the foreign language education lost much of its force. In 1978, President Carter demanded a special committce be set up for foreign languages and international researches, Which requlated and made the policies for the country to develop its foreign language education and made it rise abruaptly and grow vigorously. In the comtemporary times, the American foreign language education tends to be internationalized, which indicates that it has entered a new period of historical development.
