This essay puts the emphasize on the importance of the research in the development of the architectural discipline under the academic system in British today, and points out that as the nature of the architectural discipline, design should be the core of research. Further more, it argues that the "critical practice" of academic architects is the medium between the research and the teaching. In this sense, it becomes an unique form of research also.
