As the magnitude scale, the characteristics of instruments, and the method of measurement are different for different periods at various seismological organizations, the magnitudes listed in different catalogues of Chinese earthquakes are usually inconsistent. On the basis of collection and collation of instrumental data of Chinese earthquakes for the period 1900-1948, the authors revised the magnitudes in order to give a catalogue with uniform magnitude scale. For surface wave and body wave magnitudes, Outenberg and Richter formulas of 1945 and 1956 were used respectively. As a supplement, the 1962 Moscow-Prague formula was used in determining magnitudes from surface waves with shorter periods. Statistical result showed that for the period of investigation the difference of surface wave magnitudes obtained by using the two formulas is tolerable.Amplitude and period data from Gutenberg and Richter's unpublished original worksheets for "Seismicity of the Earth and Associated Phenomena" and all other available sources were used. Calibration curve of Xujiahui (Zi-ka-wei) seismic station was established. An empirical formula for estimating magnitude from maximum distance of registration of P-waves was found. Regression curves of magnitudes listed in various catalogues relative to our revised magnitudes were obtained. On these bases, a new catalogue of Chinese earthquakes from 1900 to 1948 with uniform magnitude scale was compiled. Only earthquakes with magnitudes greater than or equal to 6.5 were listed in this paper.Statistical comparison showed that our revised magnitudes agree well with that of Abe for major earthquakes. Although the mean deviation of the magnitudes listed in the 1983 edition of "Catalogue of Chinese Earthquakes" [excluding those quoted directly from Hsu Mingtung's (Xu Mingtong) catalogue] from our result is small, the scattering is rather large.The meaning of the magnitude given in ''Seismicity of the Earth and Associated Phenomena" was investigated. Our conclusion is consistent with that of Geller and Kanamori. The seismicity of China and the monitoring capacity of Chinese earthquakes by world wide seismic stations for the period 1900-1948 were discussed, and a conversion formula between surface wave and body wave magnitudes of Chinese earthquakes was given.

In this study, Love wave dispersion data of 117 selected wave paths crossing the Pacific ocean basin are determined by applying the MF-FTAN technique to SRO/GDSN long period data. An improved grid dispersion inversion method is proposed to extract pure-path dispersion curves over all 10° ×10° composing grids from the mixed-path dispersion data for a more extensive study. The lateral distributions of Love wave group velocities in the Pacific for 28 periods in the range of 18 to 215 seconds have been obtained which indicate a progressive increase in velocity with respect to the increasing age of the sea floor and other detailed features. For instance, the group velocities in the north and south Pacific are relatively lower than that in the central Pacific by 0.1 to 0.3 km/s for the same isochron. The three dimensional shear velocity structure to a depth of 300 km constructed on the basis of the grid model inversion provides a detailed description on the lateral heterogeneities in the Pacific crust and upper mantle.

It is considered very important for the study of wave field fo determine the wave equation solution under the condition of anisotropic media and different actions. In this paper, the solution finding was made for wave equation under the conditions of periodical surface, concentrated force as well as the tangenfi-al force. Consequently, the analytical expressions of the potential function and the displacement function for homogeneous lateral isotropic media and for different actions were derived.
