Twenty-three kinds of activated carbons made from domestic raw materials were tested for comparison of their removing powers of radioactive iodine and methyl iodide under the same conditions. As a result, the activated carbon made with oil palm shells, impregnated with 2% TEDA-2% KI, is the best and can be used as adsorptive materials in filter for removing radioactive waste from nuclear power stations.

This paper reports a research work on the development of a grained carbonaceous adsorbent containing humic acid prepared from Da-Tong weathered coal. The adsorbent has a good ability to remove heavy metal ions from polluted water without dissolving the humic acid and is possessed of strength to a certain extent. Experiment shows that the order of removal of different metal ions by the weathered coal is as follows: Pb~(2+)>Hg~(2+)>Fe~(3+)>Cu~(2+)~>Cd~(2+)>Zn~(2+)>Ca~(2+)>Ni~(2+)>Mg~(2+)>Cr~(3+). It is confirmed that the adsorbent is low in cost, good in effect and can be used in the treatment of wastewater containing heavy metal ions. It is expected that the pollution can be controlled, the metal can be recovered and the water can be renewed.The mechanism of the removal of nickel ions in the wastewater is also preliminary explored in this article. It will facilitate the development of this new type of adsorbent. The main factors in the process of removal of nickel ions, e. g. the total content of acidic functional groups and iodic adsorption ratio are also discussed.
