    There is data scattered through the literature on microstructures produced when cast iron is poured in iron moulds, but no systematic study has been made of the effect of inoculation under closely controlled conditions. .In the present work, series ot grey irons were poured into grey iron moulds. The combined effect on their structures of inoculation along with mould coatings, mould temperature, pour temperature, and base iron composition were studied.     There is data scattered through the literature on microstructures produced when cast iron is poured in iron moulds, but no systematic study has been made of the effect of inoculation under closely controlled conditions. .In the present work, series ot grey irons were poured into grey iron moulds. The combined effect on their structures of inoculation along with mould coatings, mould temperature, pour temperature, and base iron composition were studied. Various proprietary inoculants and cast inoculant mould inserts were used, it was found that surface chill could be eliminated in cast rods of grey iron with diameter down to 22.4 mm, but that irregular graphite forms were always present at the rod centres. The inoculant inserts were effective in reducing carbides. The proprietary ladle inoculants were more efficient than foundry grade fcrrosili-con, but there was no noticeable superiorty of one over the other. Tensile strength of the grey iron rods was approximately equivalent to that of sand-cast material.
