Chang Shan, the subterranean portion of Dichroa febrifuga Lour. (family Hydrangeaceae), and Shu Chi, the leafy tops of the same plant, have been used in Chinese medicine more than two thousand years, but their antimalarial action has been scientifically proved and constituents investigated only in recent years. A brief account of their history, botanical source, plant habit, cultiva-tion and collection and a detailed description of their sensory, macroscopical and microscopical characters are given. The important diagnostic features of Chang Shan are:-vessels with long oblique end-plates having well-marked scalariform perforations and often containing tyloses; septate xylem-fibres; idioblasts containing bundles of acicular crystals embedded in mucilage; thick-walled pericyclic fibres; the deep-seated origin of the cork. A well-marked medullary sheath of thick-walled, lignified and pitted parenchyma occurs in the pith of both the stem and rhizome. The important diagnostic features of Shu Chi are:-thick-walled, warty, unicellular trichomes; paracytic (rubiaceous) stomata; epidermal cells with pitted anticlinal walls and finely striated cuticle; water-pores in the teeth of the leaf; idioblasts with bundles of acicular crystals em-bedded in mucilage; droplets of fixed oil in most of the cells of the leaf; thick-walled pericyclic fibers from the stem as well as deep-seated cork and characteristic vessels as seen in the subterranean organs. The significance of some of the microscopical findings as a further illustration of the connexion between anatomy and taxonomy is also discussed.

1. Suan-tsao-jen (酸棗仁) is the dried kernels of the fruits of Zizyphus spinosus Hu. It is used in Chinese medicine as a sedative and recommended especially in sleeplessness, whether from weakness or from pain. 2. A detailed account of their morphological and histological characters is made together with eleven plates of illustration. 3. After a careful comparison of Suan-tsao-jen with Tsao-jen (棗仁), it is proved that Tsao-jen is the kernel of the fruit of the plant, Zizyphus jujuba Mill. The distinguished pharmacognostical characters of Suan-tsao-jen and Tsao-jen are described in three tables. 4. The important diagnostic features of Suan-tsao-jen are as follows: (1) The palisade cells of the seed coat, up to 80 μ in length, with light line, the outer and the radial walls of which are considerably thickened. The radial walls show unequal thickening, the lower portions taper off to form thin-walls. (2) Nutritive layer, consisting of collapsed parenchyma cells with brownish content. Imbedded within the outer margin of this layer will be noted a few groups of parenchyma cells. (3) The inner seed coat, consisting of 1-2 layers of rectangular cells with beaded walls. (4) Endosperma, consisting of irregular thin-walled cells, up to 35 μ in length, containing aleurone grains and oil globules. (5) Mucilaginous zone of endosperma, 20-30, μ in width. (6) The rectangular epidermis cells of cotyledone, up to 25 μ in length. containing calcium oxalate in rosette aggregates about 3μ in diameter. The mesophyll cells of the cotyledons are elongated and contain oil globules and aleulone grains.

Hydrocortisone acetate was administered daily by intramuscular injection (2.5mg/ 100gm body weight) to 14 adulat rats.Another 6 rats were used as controls.The ex- perimental animals were divided into 3 groups of which the first group were sacrificed 24 hours after 3 injections,the second group 24 hours after 6 injections and the third group 9 days after 6 injections.The liver of both the experimental and control animals were studied with routine histological and histochemical methods. After the hydrocortisone treatment,the rats decreased in body weight,but the liver weight/body weight percentage increased.The parenchymal cells showed a marked de- pletion of eosinophil granules,protein and ribonucleic acid,but the content of glycogen and the activity of phosphorylase increased.There was a drop in the activity of non- specific esterase. The change of alkaline phosphatase was not consistent.The content of desoxyribo- nucleic acid and lipids and the activity of acid phosphatase and succinic dehydrogenase did not show any distinct changes.

1.本实验用成年雄雌性大白鼠20只,体重为100—200克。其中六只动物作为对照。其余动物经臀部肌肉注射氢化可的松2.5毫克/100克体重,每日一次,分为注射三次、六次和注射六次后生活9日三组。大部分动物(16只雄性动物)经绝食24小时后杀死取材,分别进行组织学及组织化学观察。2.注射氢化可的松后动物体重下降,肝重略有增加,肝重/体重百分比也随之升高。3.实验动物肝细胞中,嗜伊红性颗粒、核糖核酸以及蛋白质均显著的减少。与此相反,肝糖原合量急剧增加。与其相伴,磷酸化酶的活性也趋于增强。非特异性酯酶的活性明显的降低。4.碱性磷酸酶的变化不一致。酸性磷酸酶、三磷酸腺苷酸酶的活性以及脱氧核糖核酸的含量均无变化。脂类含量及琥珀酸脱氢酶的活性也无改变。
