On the basis of the mechanism of degenerate chain-branching reaction in the process of autoxidation of olefine, and taking account of the fact that (a) decomposition of hydroperoxide would produce either free radicals or stable products, and (b) as a characteristic of polymer reaction in solid state chain termination could take place by uniradical reaction, the present authors derived the following equation describing the kinetics of oxygen-absorption by the polymer at a given temperature:where a=xk7/xk7+(1-x)kB;x and y-the fractions of chainbranching reaction and uniradical termination respectively;Vt -the volume of oxygen absorbed by the polymer at time t (cc O2/g polymer);V∞-the limiting volume of oxygen absorbed by the polymer during the whole process(cc O2/g polymer); k7 and kB-rate constants for decomposition of hydroperoxide into free radicals andstable products respectively; k5 and k6-rate constants of biradical and uniradical termination respectively; k3-rate constant of chain propagation.2. The above equation may be verified by the kinetic data of oxygen-absorption taken by cis-l,4-polybutadiene, obtained under different experimental temperatures and with different types and concentration of additives, since these factors may directly affect the values of α and y, which reflect the degree of effective chain-branching reaction. If the experimental data under a given condition are plotted with Invs. time t, two different slopes may be obtained for the upper and lower parts of the curve, which may be interpreted as being due to the variation of α and y. Therefore, using the greater slope as a basis, a slope ratio βr may be obtained, which may be defined as the relative coefficient of the degree of effective chain-branching reaction, the value of which should be less or equal to 1.3. For autoxidation of a sample of cis-l,4-polybutadiene prepared in this laboratory, the values of βr are 0.5, 0.73, 1.0 and 1.0 for experiments carried out at 60, 70, 80 and 90℃ respectively. For a purified commercial sample, by keeping the experimental temperature at 70℃, the value of γr is 0.29 fof the polymer without any additive; when acetylacetonate of cobalt was added, it increased to 0.66, 0.89, 1.0 and 1.0 for concentrations at 5, 10, 15 and 20 ppm respectively, indicating that the branching reaction has been accelerated. However, the value of γr could be taken as a constant when iron salt was added at concentrations lower than 40 ppm; while the value of γr decreased to 0.26 when acetylacetonate of copper was added at 20 to 300 ppm showing that inhibition occurred.
