This paper tackles the problem of a Middle Proterozoic fossil subduction complex. The Kuanping complex in the northern East-Qinling Mountains is a complex schist series, dated at 1400—1800 m. y. It is Iocated at the southern margin of the ancient continental plate of North China as a belt, and is parallel to the ancient volcanic arc of the Xionger Group, which has the age similar to the Kuanping complex. The original rock assemblage of the Kuanping complex consists of oceanic tholeiite, ultrabasic rocks and silicalite, which indicate the oceanic crust segments, flysch graywacke and marble. The structural characteristics of the Kuanping complex are a series of thrusting sheets, multiple foliation structures, which form multiple complex folds and local melange.Our investigation shows that the Kuanping complex is a Middle Proterozoic fossil subduction complex, being a result of the subduction and accretion of the south ancient oceanic plate to the an cient continental plate of North China. It is one of the evidences of the earliest plate subduction at the south margin of the ancient continental plate of North China.

In the survey domain, there are three stage ophiolites of middle Ordovician, mid-late Siliurian and middle Devonian, their ages getting younger from the south to the north. According to geological data, they have the same rock association, after recovered,similar to those of the typical ophi olites with the style of four layered texutres reported at home and abroad. On the basis of content and variation of the major oxides in various rocks relevant to ophiolite, combining the REE distribution pattern and their geological characters, author suggests that the bottom metamorphic peridotite of these ophiolites would be a residue after the different degree melting of mantle and the basic complex, volcanic lava, diabase and leucocrate were formed by differentiation from the same host magma that was differential products of basaltic magma abstracted from the different degree fusion of mantle. Based on the facts that layered gabbro and ultramafic cumulate are less development, volcanic lava thiner in thickness, diabasic dyke small in size and intercalated shale absent in pelagic sediments, as well as, volcanic lava, gabbro and diabase all are of an alkaline-subalkaline in petrochemical composition and of an even to enriched REE distribution pattern. Those show that they could be formed in an epicontinental sea trough with a slowly spreading speed. Similarly,it is supposed that their formation would be formed in an environment near by a continental margin to an oceanic ridge, according to the gradual descent of alkaline content and abundance of REE and evening of REE distribution patternfor volcanic lava of three ages ophiolites( from the south to the north ), and combining the variation of initialt~(87)Sr/~(86)Sr ratio in volcanic lavas from middle Ordovieian, mid-late Silurian and middle Devonian ophiolites. Finally, illustrated by the polar distribution and occurrence features of ophiolite in conjunction with regional geologic data, three different age ophiolties were merged, following with the subduction of plate towards south and north respectively, into the folded mountain Systems on adjoining continental margin as crushed bits of the ancient oceanic crust. The Tarim plate was joined together with the Siberia plate in the line of Hobok valley basin by the end of middle Devonian time and then, this area gradually transformed into the environment of a platform sedimentation.

The recent works demonstrate that the Tongbai-Dabie Range (T-DR), eastern segment of Qinling mountains in central China, is a collisional orogenic belt characterised by large thru-st-decollement with at least 140 km of horizontal transport. It is composed of the collisional melange, subducting continental crust, thrust-over continental crust, relic sea molasse forma-, tion and foreland fold belt. Its main tectonic evolution can be subdivided into 4 periods: 1), the disintegration of Pan-China Plate, and the formation of Palaeotethys ocean crust before early Palaeozoic; 2), ocean-continental subduction during late Silurian-Devonian; 3), intercontinental subduction and large shallow crustal deformation from the end of Devonican to Carboniferous; 4), since late Jurassic the range has upwarped and has been sliced by huge east west sinistral strikeslip faults.
