The authors conduct an investigation on used valve balls of sucker rod pumps by means of microscope, scanning electron microscope and electron probe, prove that the interaction of corrosion, abrasion and fatigue is the dominant cause of valve ball failures, and assert that the main way to improve the service life of valve balls is to provide high corrosion-and abrasion-resistant properties of the pall materials.
