It provides some important constraints on the energy source in the large planets. Various theories explaining such an energy source and their difficulties are discussed. It is shown in principle that the old mechanism of thermonuclear reaction first presented by Ga-mow and Bethe is only suitable for superhigh temperature or lower density fusion plasmas. A new mechanism of thermonuclear reaction is briefly introduced. It can be well applied to-all the fusion plasmas, whether at superhigh temperature or at lower temperature. The old thermonuclear mechanism is a special example of it. It can not only interpret the mass-luminosity relation of the large planets, but also explain those constraints on their energy source. It is also found that the causes of a number of abnormal fusion phenomena observed in laboratory and in astrophysics are the same in principle, i.e. all of them can be interpreted by this new mechanism of thermonuclear reaction, although these phenomena appear in various forms in the nature.

A new concept of directionally solidified superfine column structure is put out after a brief review of the relations between solidification microstructures, properties of solidified materials and solidification parameters. And futher research has been done on the superfine column structures of directionally solidified Ni-5(wt)% Cu alloy and a cobalt base K10 superalloy by using the newly developped ZMLMC directional solidification equipment which has a superhigh temperature gradient.

Research work, mainly concerned with improvement of mechanical propertics of superalloys with superhigh temperature gradient, bas been steadily undertaken at Northwestern Polytechnical University (NPU) for some six years. This research requires special equipment ZMLMC (Zone Melting and Liquid Metal Cooling) which was especially designed by NPU Department of Materials Science and Engineering. With ZMLMC equipment, a superhigh temperature gradient of 1300K cm-1 can be reached. NPU bas done research on dendritic characteristics, under superbigh temperature gradient, of Al-4.5%Cul[1], cobalt-base supcralloy[2] , and nickel-base supcralloy[3]. In this paper, the authors present their rescarch results on such dcndritic charactistics of supcralloy DZ22 (approximately equivalent to the well-known U .S. DS superalloy PWA1422). When cooling rate is raised, the dendritic arm spacings of DZ22 become significantly smaller and the dendritic segregation is strongly suppressed. When cooling rate is 54.2K s-1, the primary and secondary arm spacings Al and 2 arc respectively about 28.8μm and 8.4μm, the segregation ratio of clements Nb, Ti, Al, Cr, Co and W all approach unity very closely.
