The study of examining the period and cause of tip kernel abortion of corn ears was conducted in 1982—1983 at Zhengzhou.Six hybrids (1982) and fifteen single crosses (1983) were used in this study. The result of this study shows that the phenomenon of tip kernel abortion of corn ears exists popularly in the region.The aborted number of tip kernels varies enormously among different genotypes.In general,the more the kernel number of differentiation on an ear is, the more the number of tip kernel abortion will be. The time of abortion usually happens in l2 to l7 days after pollination.The cause of abortion is mainly related to the late development of tip kernel of corn ears and the lack of assimilate supply to the ears.During the primary period of grain filling,in the kernels of the middle and lower part of the corn ear, the higher the reducing suger content, the higher the rate of reducing suger iniverting into starch afterwards, and thus the kernels will be fully filled and normally developed.Conversely, a lower content of reducing suger and a lower rate of reducing suger inverting into starch would frequently result in the kernel abortion and the bare tip kernel.

This experiment has been studied for two years. The result showed that the rate of Kernel abortion on corn ear tip could be reduced by sproying 24—Epibr asinolide (BR).The effect of sproying 0.01PPM BR on whole plant on reducing kernel abortion was more significant than that of other treatments and it also seemed that the result of spraying BR before tassel emegence was better than that of spraying BR after silk of corn. Although spraying BR on corn ear for several times could reduce kernel abortion, its result was not better than one of spraying BR on whole plant. Photosynthetic rate, Chlorophyll content and specifie leaf weight increased,but relative electric conductivity of kernel of ear tip declined by spraying BR, (that is, the activity of kernel increased). These characters correlated significantly with the rate of kernel abortion. In addition, 1000-grain weight also increased by spraying BR after corn silk. Therefore it was concluded from the result of this study that BR could improve the yield of corn by increasing 1000-grain weight and grain number of ear.

根据二年的观察和测定结果表明,表油菜素内酯(24—Epi brassinolide,简称BR)能够减少玉米果穗顶端籽粒的败育率。用0.01PPM BR全株喷施效果较好。抽雄前全株喷施似乎比吐丝后喷施对减少籽粒败育的效果更好。喷施米果穗的次数增多,虽能减少败育率,但效果不如全株喷施。喷施BR以后,玉植株光合作用增强、比叶重和叶绿素含量增高,而果穗顶端籽粒的相对电导率下降(即籽粒活性增强)。这些性状均与籽粒败育率呈显著或极显著相关。另外,吐丝后喷施BR亦有增加千粒重的效果。因而BR从增加穗粒数和粒重两个方面提高了玉米的籽粒产量。

In this paper,kernel abortion,types of abortive kernel and theircharacteristics,physiological causes,and the factors affecting kernel abortionof corn were summerized.The possible ways for reducing kernel abortionwere also dicussed.

本文对玉米果穗败育粒的发生、败育粒的类型、败育发生的时间及其特征,籽粒败育的生理机理及影响籽粒败育的因素等进行了综述;并对减少籽粒败育的可能途径进行了概述与分析。
