In this article, we report the formation of fractal structures in nickel-based alloy systems, in thin films during ion beam-solid interactions. The experimental results show that a necessary condition for the fractal growth in thin films is amorphous structural phase transition in the amorphous matrix. The fractal dimensions of the observed patterns depended on the specific alloy systems: Df = 1.4 for Ni-Zr system and Df=1.7 for Ni-Mo system. By analyzing the transmission spectra of many kinds of fractal in different systems, we found that the position of the new absorption band in the transmission spectrum was proportional to logarithmic time. Furthermore we found that the whole curve of position of new absorption band as function of logarithmic time could be divided into two straight parts. This shows that while the fractal growth proceeds, there are mainly two different...

The concept of fractals is introduced with some examples on their mathematical gene- ration. We then describe the application of fractals to research in material science and te- chnology, including powder growth, fractal growth caused by non-equilibrium treatment, fractals of fractured surfaces, surface fractals, fractals in inorganic matter, fractals in spin glass and fractals in semiconductor thin films.
