Yet doubt arises if we try to view those terms not as purely distributionalfacts, but as evolutionary...

In fact, terms for purple (zi,紫) and pink (hong,红,now meaning red)in ancient Chinese occured much earlier than terms for blue (lan,蓝) and brown (he,褐). This counter-example, the author argues, can be explained in the light of traditional Chinese dyeing technologyand dyestuffs. Similarly, some common features in different colour systems may be ascribed toparallel environmental and cultural constraints.

1969年,美国的两位语言学家伯林(Brent Berlin)和凯(Paul Kay)提出基本颜色词(basic color terms)理论。该理论主张,人类语言具有十一个基本颜色范畴,各种具体语言中表示这些颜色范畴的基本颜色词虽然数量可以不等,但都遵循一种可分为七个阶段的普遍发生顺序。1978年,凯和麦克丹尼尔(Chad K.McDaniel)对该理论作了补充和修正。本文拟对基本颜色词理论作一概评,指出该理论与汉语基本颜色词的演变事实不相符合之处,并从文化角度对颜色词产生和发展的某些事实作出解释。

This paper studies the international universality and nationalpersonality of the colour terms and their rhetorical functions in literaturebeginning with their classification and characteristics. The results show thatthe colour terms are rich in expression. They are indispensable stong rhet-orical means, and indeed an important problem worth profoundly dealingwith in language study.

本文从颜色词的分类及特点入手,研究它的国际共性、民族个性以及它在文学作品中的修辞作用。研究结果表明,颜色词是富有表现力的词,是不可缺少的有力修辞手段,是语言研究中一个重要课题,值得进行深入的探讨。

Colour terms not only describe colour but also bring associative or symbolic meaning. The conceptions of colour are much different between Chinese and English, due to some reasons, such as culture, politics, religion, society, custom and so on . At the same time, for the communication between different cultures and other reasons there are some resemblances and overlaps.

颜色词不仅描述颜色 ,而且具有联想意义和象征意义。因历史、文化、政治、经济、宗教、习俗和社会环境等因素的影响 ,汉英两民族的颜色观存在着许多差异。但随着中西文化交流的日益频繁和异质文化的趋同性影响 ,两种语言所反映的颜色观又出现了相似或叠合的现象。
