In the last twenty-five years, many coordination catalyst systems based on transition metals, with d-orbital electrons, of group IV-VIII in the periodic table have been proposed for stereospecific polymerization. Since 1963, we have found a relatively new "family" of coordination catalysts composed of rare earth compound for stereospecific polymerization of conjugated dienes. With the above mentioned catalysts high yields (>94%) of cis-1,4 polydienes including polybutadiene, polyisoprene, copolymer of butadiene...

In the last twenty-five years, many coordination catalyst systems based on transition metals, with d-orbital electrons, of group IV-VIII in the periodic table have been proposed for stereospecific polymerization. Since 1963, we have found a relatively new "family" of coordination catalysts composed of rare earth compound for stereospecific polymerization of conjugated dienes. With the above mentioned catalysts high yields (>94%) of cis-1,4 polydienes including polybutadiene, polyisoprene, copolymer of butadiene and isoprene etc. with satisfactory properties are obtained.This paper presents briefly the results of the investigation about lanthanide coordination catalysts prepared in our laboratory. The effects of the compositions of lanthanide catalysts, and of a variety of rare earth elements, aluminium alkyls and the third components etc. on the catalytic activity and stereospecifity of the catalyst are reported. Interpretations of catalytic mechanism are also given.

The terpolymerization of epichlorohydrin, ethylene oxide and propylene oxide with triisobutylaluminium-phosphoric acid-r.itrogen-eontaining electron donor as catalyst has been studied. It is shown that as the third component of the catalyst di-methylaniline is the best, tetramethylthiuram disulfide or triethylamine the next, and benzothiazole the worst. While pyridine is used as the third component of the catalyst, the inherent viscosity of the terpolymer obtained is low. The catalytic activity is higher when water is present in equal moles to phosphoric acid. It is indicated that at the beginning of the terpolymerization ethylene oxide and propylene oxide polymerize more quickly and epichlorohydrin polymerizes slowly. With increase of propylene oxide in the monomer mixture, the inherent viscosity of the terpolymer decreases and the glass transition temperature passes through a minimium value.
