What causes the earth crust to move? This is a principal theoretical problem of the earth science and has been a point at issue among the geologists. In this paper, a new hypothesis is presented in respect of this problem-the hypothesis of density equilibrium ellipsoid. In support of this hypothesis, the writer puts forward his views on a series of geological phenomena, such as the formation of the Himalaya range, San Andres fault, geosynclines, deep-sea troughs, ε-type structuses, etc.

The specifications of the ZX-79 string-frequency borehole strain meter are given in this paper. Its sensitivity, daily stability and "coincidence accuracy" are all as high as 10-9. The data observed continuously during the past two years show that the daily variations of the tidal strain due to strong and weak tide are 4-5×10-8 and 2-3×10-8 respectively. The annual variation of the strain at the surface of the earth is of order of 10-6, and the anomalous variation of the strain in the crust before an earthquake...

Therefore, it would offer us a possible way to employ the sensitive borehole strain meters developed in our country for the measurement of physical parameters in earth science and earthquake prediction.

本文给出3ZX—79型弦频式钻孔应变仪的性能及主要指标.其灵敏度,日稳定度、“内符合精度”均已达到10~(-9).从两年多来的连续实测资料表明,所测到的日应变固体潮大潮幅度在4—5×10~(-8);小潮幅度在2—3×10~(-8).地球表层年应变幅为10~(-6)数量级;震前地壳应变前兆信息在10~(-7)数量级上.从而表明:采用我国自己研制的高精度钻孔应变仪,为地球科学各项主要参数的测量研究、探索地震预报,提供了一种可能.
