(2) Three athlete groups (especialy endurance group) had alower heart rates and a higher stroke volume than untrained men, which means exercise training hadraised the mechanical efficiency of athlete's heart. Echocardiogram and exercise ECG test (EECG) on bicycle ergometer were carried out in 34 elderly former athletes including 26 normal subjects (group 1) and 8 with abnormal EECG (group 2) and also in control groups including 44 healthy elderly subjects (group 3) and 25 with coronary artery disease (group 4). Marked left ventricular wall motion abnormality was excluded in group 4 by two dimension echocardiography. Group 1 and 2 were followed up for 2 years. Thickness and weight of the left ventricular wall and inner dimension of the left auricle in elderly former athletes were larger than those in control groups (P<0.05-0.01). Systolic pumping function, left ventricular end diastolic pressure and compliancy capacity remained to be the characteristics of the hearts of part of the athletes. Cardiac function in group 2, though not as good as that in group 1, was still better than that in group 4, in which cardiac function deteriorated significantly. These results combined with other data such as clinical symptoms, 2-year's follow-up, family history and so on, showed that there was a high possibility of early coronary artery disease in group 2. It was possible that heavy but scientific training had not any long term bad effect upon the heart of the athletes. The higher ratio of abnormal EECG in younger former athletes with coronary artery disease was probably due to both abnormal training in their early years and other factors liable coronary artery disease. Therefore, a scientific training program throughout the training period should be planned and a rational health protection system including adaptive exercises should be carried out among elderly former athletes.

用超声心动图和ECG运动实验观察中老年“过去的运动员”左心形态和功能,并通过2年随访,对其中ECG运动试验阳性者作出评价,认为ECG阳性并非由训练直接引起,而与一般冠心病好发因素有关。文章指出,对过去的运动员也应保持适量的健身运动并制定合理的生活制度。
