    Directional impedance relays (mho relays) are frequently used in high-voltage power systems.     Directional impedance relays (mho relays) are frequently used in high-voltage power systems. Experimental results and theoretical analysis show that, after the inception of a fault, these relays with "memory action" present transient characteristics which are quite different from their steady-state characteristics. Due to these characteristics, it is possible to apply carrier-blocking directional impedance relaying as the main protection for lines with series capacitors, disregarding the location of the capacitors and the degree of compensation. It is also possible to satisfy the conflicting requirements of avoiding undesirable tripping during power swings and assuring reliable operation during short circuit faults.

    Starting from the fundamental equations of electric machine, this paper develops an analytic method of investigation of the self-excitation problem of asynchronous machine connected through series capacitor. Constant synchronously rotating system components dc and qc and method of small oscillational equations are used in the analysis; steady state oscillational principles, spectrum frequency analysis of discriminating occurrence of self-excitation are discussed. Correlation between these methods are also described. Results obtained from this theoretical analytic method are compared with those obtained from experimental tests, the agreement between them is very close. It is found that the basic nature of self-excitation phenomenon of asynchronous machine, as shown from the results of this investigation, is a kind of resonance among the electro-mechanical parameters of the machine. Traditional methods of analysis, being used so far by many writers, regarding the speed of the machine as a constant factor, cannot reveal the effect of rotational inertia of the machine upon the self-excitation process.
