This paper introduces a new type of water-proof magnet wires used for water immersed electric machines. It, at first, describes the general properties of polyimide and polyimide-imide and the ageing mechanism of polyimide water-proof wires with investigations in practice, and then, studies the influence of the coating of the conductor of water-proof wires on ageing, and presents, on the basis of the theory of "water-treeing", the mechanism of the coating which will prolongate the life of water-proof wires. The paper thus points out the relevant properties that a good coating should posess and the reasons why polyimide coating can prolongate the life of waterproof wires, and finally, it proposes some questions that should be paid attention to in technological process.

In this article are presented the experimental results of a new type of semi-conducting coating used as the insulation shield of high voltage plastic power cables.In recent years semi-conducting coating technology has been developed for the insulation shield of high voltage plastic power cables. Our experimental work shows that the semi-conducting coating possesses better shield effect. The cable insulation shielded by the semi-conducting coating would have higher dielectric strength and corona (treeing discharges) level, i.e. the semi-conducting coating greatly improves the insulation characteristics of the cable. It is also shown that the volume resistivity of a good shield coating should be in the range ρ_v≤10~5Ω, cm.The semi-conducting coatings developed in our laboratory, such as Compound 76-1 and Compound 78-1, may be satisfactorily used as the insulation shield for the plastic power cable. These coatings are cheap in cost, simple in application and excellent in shield effect.
