This is a preliminary report on the forecasting of swarming, or colonizing flight, ofReticulitermes flaviceps Oshima. The swarming usually occur in the middle part of March.Under specific meteorological conditions, it may occur earlier in late Feburary or later inlate April. The important meteorological factors in connection with swarming are thespring rain, temperature and atmospheric pressure. Swarming occurs only on sunny daysof a warm weather after rain in the spring, beginning from mid-day and continuing...

This is a preliminary report on the forecasting of swarming, or colonizing flight, ofReticulitermes flaviceps Oshima. The swarming usually occur in the middle part of March.Under specific meteorological conditions, it may occur earlier in late Feburary or later inlate April. The important meteorological factors in connection with swarming are thespring rain, temperature and atmospheric pressure. Swarming occurs only on sunny daysof a warm weather after rain in the spring, beginning from mid-day and continuing untilabout two o'clock in the afternoon, sometimes might delay to four o'clock p. m., when thetemperature rises to 20℃. and the air pressure suddenly drops below 760 mm (usuallybetween 750 mm and 755 mm). In a small colony of this species, the swarming occurredonly once, and in a smallest colony observbd swarming lasted about ten minutes; while ina large colony, swarming occurred several times in successively favorable days. At thetime of a sudden drop of temperature and a rising atmospheric pressure, swarming maybe duly stopped, and it may resume again on the recurence of favorable conditions. Ifweather-forecasting such as the temperature, the air pressure be corectly foretold; the swar-ming of the alate of R. flaviceps Oshima can be predicted accurately. These termitesusually construct the nest in the foundation timber and wood floor, building no runwaysor galleries above the floor. It is often difficult to locate the termitarium and its galleries.Swarming may tell us the presence of a colony in the vicinity and gives us a sign timelyfor the control with poisonous materials.

In Hua-yuan district, this insect hibernates mainly in the open field. And flight comes tomaximum in middle and late April. 3. The results of field or indoor experiment on various organic insecticides (BHC & D. D.T.) indicated that the 6 percent gamma BHC was the most effective at a dilution of 1:100--300,and 25% D. D. T. at a dilution of 1:400--500.

With the aid of a hydrogen lamp, illuminating at 5 ~ 8 X 10-8 Sec., the flight time of photoelectrons of serveral kinds of photomultiplier has been determined by employing the oscilloscopic method; an investigation as to the effect of the outer circuit of RCA-5819 for resolution time has been made and the better working state suitable for instant observation for the spectrum...
